On August 21, at 7:00 p.m. (local time), Brazil\u2019s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, COP30 President, Ambassador Andr\u00e9 Corr\u00eaa do Lago, and former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, will hold a press conference to present the outcomes of the South and Central America and the Caribbean of the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES). The event will take place at the Centro Felicidad Chapinero in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As one of the key mobilization pillars of COP30, the initiative examines, from an ethical perspective, the actions humanity still needs to take to address climate change in line with science and with the Paris Agreement\u2019s goal of limiting the rise in global average temperature to 1.5 \u00b0C above pre-industrial levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by the first Global Stocktake of the international treaty, concluded at COP28, the GES calls for reflection on the progress achieved so far, the path that still lies ahead, and the behavioral shifts and collective trajectories required to ensure an ethical commitment to deploying the technical solutions already available. The GES is being advanced through Regional Dialogues, taking place across different continents through October.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bogot\u00e1 meeting will bring together religious, political, and business leaders, artists, representatives of Indigenous peoples, local and Afro-descendant communities, youth, scientists, policymakers, and activists from South and Central America and the Caribbean. The first dialogue was held in London in June, representing Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

In each region, a co-convenor helps promote and coordinate the principles, objectives, and implementation of the Global Ethical Stocktake. Michelle Bachelet serves as co-convenor for the South, Central America, and Caribbean region.<\/span><\/p>\n

The process will culminate in six regional reports and one synthesis report, which will be presented to the COP30 Presidency at the Pre-COP in October for consideration in decision-making and submission to heads of state and climate negotiators. In addition to the Regional Dialogues, the GES also includes Self-Organized Dialogues, led by civil society organizations and national and subnational governments, following the same methodology and principles of the central process.<\/span><\/p>\n
