On September 5th, at 2 p.m. (local time), minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, Marina Silva; regional director for Africa at the World Resources Institute (WRI), Wanjira Mathai; President of COP30, Ambassador Andr\u00e9 Corr\u00eaa do Lago; and CEO of COP30, Ana Toni, will hold a press conference to present the outcomes of the African Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES). The event will take place at the Creative HUB Ethiopia, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, alongside the UN Climate Week in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

As one of the key mobilization pillars of COP30, the Global Ethical Stocktake brings a moral lens to the urgent climate actions humanity must undertake in alignment with science and the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake, the GES seeks to reflect on the progress made so far, identify the path forward, and foster the behavioral and collective transformations required for a shared ethical commitment to implementing existing technical solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The GES unfolds through a series of Regional Dialogues held across continents through October. The first, representing Europe, was held in London, United Kingdom; the second, in South and Central America and the Caribbean, took place in Bogota, Colombia, and the third, in Asia, happened in New Delhi, India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each region has a co-leader responsible for promoting and coordinating the principles, objectives, and implementation of the GES. <\/span>In Africa, this role is held by Wanjira Mathai.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other co-leaders include the former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson (Europe), the former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet (Latin America and the Caribbean), the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi (Asia), the former President of Kiribati, Anote Tong (Oceania), and the U.S. activist and founder of the Center for Earth Ethics, Karenna Gore (North America).<\/span><\/p>\n

Led by Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the GES will produce six regional reports and a synthesis report to be presented at the Pre-COP in Bras\u00edlia this October. These documents will be submitted to the COP30 Presidency to help inform decision-making processes and guide heads of state and climate negotiators.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the Regional Dialogues, the GES is supported by Self-Organized Dialogues led by civil society organizations and national and subnational governments, all following the same methodology and guiding principles.<\/span><\/p>\n
